Hello my name is Hana Yoshikawa and I am a senior at Kihei Charter High School. My driving question is how can I support people who face discrimination and mistreatment? Discrimination has been a problem in this world for a very long time. 31% of U.S. adults report at least 1 major discrimination occurence in their lifetime. I have always been aware of this issue, but I never truly knew in depth what levels of discrimination there is, how much it impacts people, and if there's anything I can do to positively contribute to the problem. There was one specific video on social media that made me want to focus on discrimination for my project. It was a video of a hate crime where a group of men attacked and robbed three transgender women in Los Angles. I was shocked and upset by what terrible things people could do to other human beings. I couldn't possibly imagine what it would be like to be hurt so severely mentally or physically and I decided that I wanted to support victims in a way that I can.
My project is a stop motion film that is made up of 8 parts. I have explained what discrimination is, examples of situations with 4 types of discriminations, effects that mistreated people can experience, how to cope as a victim, and lastly a short animation focused on love.
Thankfully I have not been in a situation of discrimination or anything that is even close to the horrible things many people have faced, but this journey creating my project has helped me get a better understanding of everything that is involved with discrimination. There were some types and situations related to discrimination that I had no knowledge of prior to this project. Everything I learned through this process is valuable and useful for me to use if I am or if someone else is being discriminated against. I hope that this video brings at least a little support, knowledge, awareness, or even a smile to whoever watches. Thank you for taking the time to look at my project.

21st Century Skills
Informational skills was one that I used for researching on the topic of discrimation. In the beginning of this project I thought that I had a reasonable amount of knowledge about discrimination, but as I started to research on the internet I realized that there was a lot more to the topic that I was basing my project on. This first skill helped me find valuable information that I needed in order to create the first seven parts of the film. I was able to get a better understanding of the terms and ideas connected to the unjust treatment with the informational skill, which was helpful knowledge to have before talking about discrimination because in the end the information that I put out is to be shared with those who watch my final product.
Communication skills, the second skill, was challenged throughout my project because I created the stop motion video to communicate a message to the audience both verbally and visually. I had to be aware of what and how I was showing and saying things in the video. I purposely used figures with different colors and shapes because we are all different and I believed that it would be a great way to portray humans as unique individuals. Self-directional skills, the third skill, was much needed in the making of the project because it was my responsibility to create the final product as well as complete all the steps leading up to it. Although there were times that I fell behind in the process, I was able to stay on track for the most part and turn in assignments on time with the support of the self-directional skill and self-deadlines.
